TikTok Releases Q2 2024 Community Guidelines Enforcement Report for Kenya

In its ongoing efforts to foster a safe and positive user experience, TikTok has released its Q2 2024 Community Guidelines Enforcement Report, shedding light on the platform’s proactive approach to content moderation in Kenya and the rest of the world. This quarterly report provides transparency into the content and accounts removed during the reporting period, for violating the platform’s Community Guidelines.
- The report reveals that over 360,000 videos were removed from TikTok in Kenya, which is 0.3% of the total videos uploaded in the country in the latest reporting period.
- Key findings show that 99.1% of these videos were proactively removed before users reported them, with 95% taken down within 24 hours.
- A total of 60,465 accounts were banned for violating TikTok’s Community Guidelines, with 57,262 accounts being removed because they were suspected to be under the age of 13.
With over a billion users and millions of pieces of content posted daily, TikTok continues to invest in advanced technologies that enhance content understanding and assess potential risks. These innovations allow the platform to detect and remove harmful content before it reaches viewers. In June 2024 alone, the platform removed over 178 million videos globally, with 144 million of those removed through automation. These technical advancements significantly reduce the volume of content that human moderators need to review, thereby minimizing their exposure to violative material. With a proactive detection rate now at 98.2% globally, TikTok is more efficient than ever at addressing harmful content before users encounter it.
In April, TikTok announced updates to its Community Guidelines aimed at providing users with more clarity on existing rules and help creators understand the platform’s policies better. The updates include new features that allow creators to check if their accounts violate the platform’s rules.
TikTok has been consistent in digital safety and education. Since October 2023, it has been running the #SaferTogether workshops in collaboration with Eveminet. These workshops aim to foster a safe and empowering environment on the app for the country’s youth.
